ENC vs ANC in Earbuds: What Actually Cancels Noise
By TezKhareed Team · Updated 2 September 2026
Two acronyms, sold as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and knowing the difference stops you from overpaying for one and missing the other.
The one-line version
- ENC — Environmental Noise Cancellation. Works on the microphone. Cleans up your voice so the person you called hears less of your background.
- ANC — Active Noise Cancellation. Works on the speakers. Uses mics to measure ambient noise and plays an inverse wave so you hear less of your surroundings.
ENC helps the other side of the call. ANC helps you. A pair can have both, either, or neither.
When ENC is what you need
If most of your earbud time is calls in noisy places — a shop counter, a rickshaw, a fan-cooled office — ENC is the spec that matters. Look for a clear ENC claim and a decent mic count. The AirPods Pro 2 (Buzzer Edition) uses an ENC mic that does a real job of cutting fan and traffic noise on calls.
ENC does nothing for what you hear. Your music and podcasts sound the same with it on or off.
When ANC is worth paying for
ANC earns its price against constant low-frequency drone: bus and generator engines, air-conditioner hum, aircraft cabins. Against that it can knock off 20–30dB, which is the difference between "loud" and "background".
It is much weaker against sudden, high-pitched sounds — a car horn, a crying child, someone talking. Do not expect silence; expect the drone to fade.
For commuters and anyone who works near a generator, ANC is worth paying for. For gym music and short trips, a good passive seal plus ENC for calls is usually enough — the AirPods Pro 2 (Buzzer Edition) covers that case.
Reading the spec honestly
| Claim on the box | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| "ENC / HD calls" | Real, if a mic count (3–4 mics) is given |
| "ANC" under ~Rs 4,000 | Often very weak or "passive noise isolation" relabelled |
| "-35dB ANC" | Best case at one frequency, not across the board |
| "ANC + ENC + gaming" on a Rs 1,500 set | Treat as marketing, not measurement |
The figures on our earbuds category page are what we measured. If a cheap set claims flagship-level ANC, it is the first number we check and usually the first one that fails.
Bottom line
Buy ENC if you take calls in noise. Add ANC only if you sit in constant drone for hours. Most people need the first and not the second — see the full range, bank transfer with fast nationwide delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Is ENC the same as ANC?+
No. ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) works on the microphone so the person you call hears less of your background. ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) works on the speakers so you hear less of yours.
Do I need ANC for the gym or commute?+
ANC helps most against constant low drone — bus engines, AC, aircraft. For gym music and short rickshaw rides, good passive fit plus ENC for calls is usually enough.
