How to Charge a Power Bank Correctly (Battery Care)

A power bank is a big lithium battery, and the same care that extends a phone battery extends this one. A few habits are the difference between a pack that lasts three years and one that's noticeably weaker after one.

Do this

• Keep it between roughly 20% and 90% for daily use. Lithium cells age fastest when held at 100% or run flat.
• Recharge it before it dies completely. Deep discharges are hard on the cells; if it does hit 0%, recharge it soon rather than leaving it empty.
• Use a charger that matches its input rating. A 20,000 mAh pack rated for 22.5W input recharges in about 4 hours; feed it 5W and it takes all night, which isn't harmful but is annoying.
• Charge it at room temperature. A pack that's hot from the sun or a car dashboard should cool before you plug it in.
• Top it up once a month if it's in storage. A power bank left at a low charge for months can drop into a deep-sleep state some chargers won't wake.

Avoid this

• Leaving it plugged in for days after it's full. Modern packs stop drawing power, but heat from the charger still ages the cells.
• Charging and discharging at the same time (pass-through) for long periods unless the maker says it's supported — it runs the pack hot.
• Hot cars, closed bags in the sun, next to a heater. Heat is the number-one killer of lithium capacity.
• Physical abuse. A dented or swollen pack should be stopped immediately and disposed of at an e-waste point — never punctured, never in household bin fires.

Charging it faster

To recharge quickly, the pack, the wall charger, and the cable all have to cooperate:

• A pack with USB-C PD input (22.5W or more) recharges far faster than one that only takes 5–10W over micro-USB — check the spec in our power banks range.

Storage

Going away for a while? Charge it to about 50–60%, switch it off if it has a power button, and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Check and top it up every 1–2 months.
