Which Cable Do You Need for 65W / 100W Fast Charging?

People buy a 65W charger, keep using the cable that came with their phone, and wonder why charging is slow. The cable is the bottleneck. Here is the rule.

Current rating decides the ceiling

USB-C cables come in two current classes:

• 3A cables — the default. Cap out around 60W (20V × 3A), and cheap ones cap lower.
• 5A cables — carry up to 100W (20V × 5A). These must contain an E-marker chip, a tiny IC that tells the charger the cable can handle 5A.

No E-marker, no 5A. The charger plays safe and limits current.

Other things that quietly cap you

• Length + thickness. A thin 2-metre cable has more resistance than a chunky 1-metre one. For fast charging, shorter and thicker is better.
• Worn connectors. A loose USB-C plug drops to a trickle. If wiggling the cable changes the charging speed, replace it.
• Data vs charge. A charging-focused cable is USB 2.0 for data (480 Mbps). That's fine — you don't need USB 3 speeds to charge. Don't pay extra for data bandwidth you won't use on a charge cable.
• Braided vs not is durability, not speed. Braided cables here are rated 10,000+ bends versus about 2,000 for a stock cable.
