Why Is My Phone Charging Slowly? 5 Causes and Fixes
By TezKhareed Team · Updated 2 September 2026
Slow charging is almost always one of five things. Work through them in order — the fix is usually free.
1. The cable
The most common cause. A charger negotiates its top speed only over a cable rated for the current. Your phone's stock cable is often 3A at best; a worn or no-name cable can be far less.
Test: try a known-good 5A / 100W E-marker cable. If speed jumps, the old cable was the problem. Details: Which Cable for 65W / 100W Fast Charging.
2. Protocol mismatch
Your phone and charger must speak the same fast-charge language — PD, PPS, or QC. A PD-only charger won't fast-charge a phone that needs QC, and vice versa. Check your phone's spec, then check the charger lists that protocol. See USB PD vs Quick Charge vs PPS.
3. The wall adapter
A 5W or 10W "normal" charger will only ever trickle. You need a PD or QC fast charger — 20W minimum for a phone, and it must state a protocol, not just an amp figure.
4. Heat
Every phone slows charging when the battery gets hot — it's protecting the cell. Causes:
- Charging in direct sun or on a bed/sofa that traps heat.
- Gaming or navigating while charging.
- A thick case holding heat in.
Fix: charge somewhere cool, screen off, case off if it's a heavy one. Charging speed recovers as the battery cools.
5. Dirty or worn port
Lint packs into the bottom of a USB-C port over months and stops the plug seating fully. Look in with a torch; pick it out gently with a wooden toothpick (never metal), phone powered off. A port that only charges at a certain angle is worn and may need service.
Also worth checking
- Background load: a phone downloading updates or running GPS can consume power as fast as it charges. Airplane mode while charging is a quick test.
- Battery health: an old battery (2+ years, hundreds of cycles) charges slower and holds less. Check Settings → Battery → Battery health.
- Charging overnight from a laptop USB port: that's 2.5–7.5W. Use a wall charger.
Still slow with a good cable, a real fast charger, and a cool phone? The issue is likely the battery or port hardware. Browse chargers and cables — bank transfer with fast nationwide delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone charge slowly when I use it?+
Heat. The phone throttles charging to protect the battery when it warms up from gaming, navigation or direct sun. Charge with the screen off, somewhere cool.
Can a dirty charging port cause slow charging?+
Yes. Lint packs into the port and stops the plug seating fully. Clear it gently with a wooden toothpick, phone powered off — never metal.
